Govt speeds up temporary post-disaster housing in Palu

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake, tsunami hit Donggala and Palu on Sept 28, 2018 evening.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government has accelerated the development of temporary post-disaster housing for victims of the earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said. Kalla, who was appointed as the Palu disaster mitigation team commander, stated that one third of the total 12 thousand temporary houses planned to be built for the victims have been finalized and occupied.

"Of the total 12 thousand, we have finished some one third of it. We are still working on it. The temporary housing are needed, because victims will be relocated," Kalla noted, after a closed-door meeting on post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction of Central Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara at the Vice Presidential office here, on Wednesday.

The public Works and Public Housing Ministry has finalized 190 of the total 699 units of temporary housing for victims of earthquake in Palu City, Sigi, and Donggala districts in Central Sulawesi. Some evacuees have begun to leave the shelter and reside in their houses.

Among the temporary housing facilities which are ready for the evacuees are 10 units of housing in Silae village of Ulujadi sub-district, with 120 rooms. The temporary housing in Duyu village of Tatanga subdistrict would be ready after the power installation is finished.

Kalla remarked that the development of the temporary housing is urgently needed as the government would have to relocate victims of the disaster that devastated the region in September.

"Areas that would not need relocation do not need temporary housing. They can just repair their own houses," he added.

The meeting was also attended by the Coordinating Minister for Culture and Human Development Puan Maharani, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto, Social Affairs Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Doni Monardo, Deputy Finance Minister Mardiasmo, and Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola.
